VATTENFALL LAUNCHES ENERGY SHARING MARKETPLACE POWERPEERS

Netherlands Vattenfall launches a new energy start-up company today in the Netherlands, Powerpeers, which is a marketplace and community where customers can decide from whom they receive their energy and who to supply with their self-generated energy. 

Powerpeers is a digital, interactive marketplace where supply and demand for self-generated energy converge. Users can supply the energy they have generated to others and choose whose energy they wish to source.
As well as sourcing self-generated electricity from friends, family or neighbours, users can also opt to supply electricity from one or more Dutch suppliers of wind, solar and hydropower. This enables customers to create their own personal community. How much energy the selected sources are supplying, can be checked online. Every kilowatt hour traded is ‘labelled’ and the energy can always be traced.

Engaging customers to help them be more sustainable is an important step in Vattenfall’s strategy and in becoming a climate-neutral company by 2050.

Martijn Hagens, Head of Customers & Solutions at Vattenfall, explains:
“We are changing our direction accordingly; the new Vattenfall is made up of a sustainable production portfolio together with customer-centric energy solutions. We will be a climate-neutral company by 2050 and Powerpeers will help us as well as its customers to become more sustainable.”

New customer demands
An increasing number of customers want to be more engaged, have more choice and control over how the energy they consume is produced, and seek new ways of interacting. Powerpeers is part of Vattenfall’s efforts to meet these new demands.

“We have developed a new type of energy company which is in line with the trend for green living and today’s connected society. As Powerpeers is a start-up, it is extremely flexible. We can evolve on an ongoing basis together with our customers.”
