French energy giant Total has this week made good on its pledge to divest from coal-related activities, confirming it no longer produces or markets coal.
Total confirmed on Monday that the sale of mine operator Total Coal South Africa has been completed. As a result, the company has withdrawn from all coal production and marketing activity.
Patrick Pouyanné, chief executive at Total, said the move "was a matter of both consistent strategy and our credibility".
The company also recently joined with five other oil and gas companies to call for the introduction of a global carbon pricing mechanism.
